The Remarkable Monkey Puzzle Trees!

Back in June 2020 I posted about a Monkey Puzzle tree that we spotted that I described as 'decapitated', What me and Nat couldn't figure out, as the post mentions, is how come this tree had not died but continued to produce seed cones at least 11 years after having its top removed.

Well, as I said in my last post, I made a remarkable discovery whilst tidying up the blog. I was looking on Google Streetview and was delighted to see that the trees in Camarthen that are referred to in the post mentioned above, have not just survived but have actually begun growing again!

My knowledge of plant science is very limited to say the least, but Nat, who does know about this, informs me this could be a process called back-budding. Now I don't pretend to understand the science involved that well, but what I do know is that it's a technique used in the art of bonsai tree shaping. I have also read that apparently it's quite rare for confers to back-bud. So it looks like if you cut the top off a Monkey Puzzle tree, there's a good chance it will regrow in the future!
